Downsizing Is An Opportunity To Simplify And Refocus

Downsizing most often comes hand in hand with major life transition. A move to a more expensive city, a divorce, a job loss, an empty nest, or simply getting older. Sometimes, it is birthed from a need to pursue a simpler life. It can be stressful and confusing, but it doesn’t have to be! Follow these simple guidelines to see it as a new opportunity to create a home that will inspire you to be the best version of you.

1) Declutter and minimize your possessions BEFORE you move

Unpacking moving boxes can cause anxiety for anyone. Add a transition that was not necessarily by choice, and it can be daunting. Being selective about what comes into your new space is essential. The time to minimize and sort through sentimental items is not after the move when you will be tired, emotional, and overwhelmed. Attics, closets and cabinets often contain non-essentials that can be difficult to part with. Grab a companion, turn on some music and dig in BEFORE you start packing. Remember, your memories are in your mind, not embedded within your possessions. Consider your limited new storage options and select only your favorites to take with you. If you need a professional organizer to help you, hiring one to help will be well worth your piece of mind.

2) Decide what furniture to keep and what to donate

The quickest way to become discouraged in your smaller home is to have it overly crowded.  Begin by identifying the pieces of furniture that are non-negotiables- maybe you keep your grandmother’s vanity, a favorite desk, the chair you rocked your babies in, or your most comfy couch. Say goodbye to the pieces that you associate with loss, negative emotions, or never really liked once you got it home. BEFORE the movers come, plan out furniture placement for your new home. If it won’t fit, sell it or donate it, but DON’T pay to move it. Be strategic about every item you decide to include. Consider putting your favorite pieces from different rooms together in your new home. Mixing and matching can give you a new look and eclectic rooms often turn out to be the most beautiful. With a little creativity, a new space that you love can be designed by “shopping” from your own possessions. If you can’t get a vision, spend the money on a couple of hours from a professional decorator to help you see the bigger picture.

3) Give yourself a budget for a few refresher items

Moving during a life transition can be emotionally draining , so adding some new “comfort” elements may be just what you need to create a space that inspires you to keep living, loving and learning to bring out the best version of you. A new stylish lamp, a cozy throw, a rug, and a few bright pillows can transform any space into an inviting room that envelops you and makes you want to curl up with a book or chat with a friend.  Splurge on a candle that you love, or maybe a pretty container with bath salts. Apothecary jars with some lavender infused Epsom salts are pretty and cost effective. Put one new touch that makes you happy in each room.

Above all, remember that you are not measured by the size of your house. You are limited and defined by the environment you choose to create within its walls and the quality of memories you make there.  Embrace a simpler home, turn on some pretty music and focus on the moments that matter. You’ve got some new memories to make.
